My two boys really want to try racing and we are planning on coming to the Oct. 25 Walden race. They really want to jump in and try racing once this year to get their feet wet. They have both been riding with me for a couple of years and are very good riders but we have a lot to learn about racing and real race bikes. They have both raced karts as well so they know the flags and have been out on tracks in a race environment, even though it was karting. I am new to this whole thing too and a little confused. Do they need to be AMA members for their first race? I did find applications on the District 34 AMA site. I assume I would need to send those in before the race?.... or can we do it at the race? Would these be the correct classes for them? What does the Novice Class mean?
My younger son was 7 on January 1 (now 8) and has a Honda CRF-50, stock 4 stroke, so I guess PW 7-8 class?
My older son was 11 on January 1 (now 12) and has a Kawasaki KLX-110, stock 4 stroke, so I guess Jr Mini?
I was thinking they could share some pads and a neck brace since they are in separate classes but would they be practicing separately in the Oct. 24 practice? Can a lame old dad (48) jump in and race a stock 125 4 stroke for fun without getting flattened? (I didn't notice a putt-putt class for dads.)
Thanks for the help! Rich |

you are correct on all of the elements you are listing. AMA is needed at walden to race, you can sign up at the track on race day, just lots of paperwork, try to be there before 730 to sign up, it gets crowded.
The bike classes seem correct. Jusst need to continually remind them that it is their 1st time and just have fun with it all.
They can share equipment if they are the same size, many racers with children may have extra kids stuff to sell cheaply. but not always advertised. sales vendors at the track are very knowledgeable and free give advice......dont be afraid to ask, we were all in your shoes at one time.
As for you, sounds like +40 c class or +30c these are the beginner type classes, but dont let the name fool you, they will keep you on your toes.
Look me up for further info or equipment leads ( need to know kid sizes/weight)
I have a son races Jr mini (757) and I do +40C(577)
As for sat practice, they do practice together, feel free to PM me for a list of thing you may need, might be able to help you.

A little friendly advice, this first weekend, except the 8 year old, forget racing, IMO. Come out to the track, make a few new friends, ride the OP and get a feel for the pace on raceday. A 125 4t in the adult classes will be dangerous in even the most tame +40. The KLX110 is in the same boat, the pack will likely lap him in the first or second lap & he will be getting jumped over if he is new to the whole thing.
I've been where you are too, get a good look at what is going on before jumping into the water & finding it too deep. They are young & missing one race won't be a big deal, there are going to be more.
See me at the finish line flagging on Sat. if you get a chance, Jim. |

if you come during practice you can all ride together on jr pro track untill we see you going to fast for other beginners and then you are good enough for the main track. _________________ TYT Construction, apex motor racing, thanks |
